Our Curriculum

Shared learning, individual challenge, growing understanding

At Luckington, our curriculum helps children become knowledgeable, curious and confident learners. We combine high ambitions for every child with a thoughtful approach to teaching in mixed-age classes, ensuring that children build securely on what they already know and can do.

Our curriculum includes the subjects we teach and the wider experiences that shape school life: Forest School, visits, visitors, sport, the arts, responsibilities and relationships. Together, these opportunities help children discover their interests, understand the wider world and develop their place within it.

A carefully planned rolling programme

Our four-year rolling programme provides the framework for learning in our Key Stage 2 mixed-age class. Across the cycle, we map subject content carefully so that every child encounters the National Curriculum requirements during their time in the class, whichever point in the programme they join.

Alongside this coverage, we plan how children’s knowledge and subject-specific skills develop over time. The rolling programme determines the content children encounter; our progression planning ensures that their learning becomes increasingly demanding.

In Reception and Key Stage 1, learning is planned around the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum, building the foundations children need for their next steps.

Learning together and moving forward

Children in a mixed-age class may explore the same subject matter while working towards different learning goals. Teachers consider what children already know, their age and stage of development, and the next steps they need to take.

For example, children studying the same historical period might all explore a selection of sources. Some may focus on identifying what a source tells us about the past, while others compare evidence, consider its limitations and use it to support an explanation.

This shared learning creates opportunities for discussion and collaboration, while carefully chosen tasks, questions, resources and support provide appropriate challenge. We adapt teaching so that children can participate meaningfully and deepen their understanding.

Building learning step by step

Progression involves both knowing more and becoming more skilled in using that knowledge. Children need secure subject knowledge to think, investigate and work effectively as historians, geographers, scientists, artists and more.

Teachers explain and model new learning, provide purposeful practice and revisit important ideas. Through discussion, observation and assessment, they check understanding, address misconceptions and decide when children are ready to move forward.

An ambitious and inclusive curriculum

We want every child to access a rich curriculum and achieve their best. We identify barriers, make appropriate adaptations and provide additional support or challenge where needed, while maintaining high expectations.

The books, materials and experiences we choose help children encounter different cultures, lives and perspectives. We encourage them to question stereotypes, value differences and treat others with respect.

Our seven school values—Respect, Resilience, Reflectiveness, Honesty, Forgiveness, Compassion and Positivity—underpin this work and guide how we learn together.
