Class 1 Blog 2021-2022

Term 1 week 1

Since we have been back to school we have been doing all of our lessons.  Our new topic is all about space! We have five new reception children and they have settled well into school.  The year 1's and Year 2's have got new homework folders and they are very excited about doing their homework! We are very happy because we get to mix with Class 2 again for assemblies and at play time and lunch time.  We have also been back on the library bus for the first time since lockdown!

Term 1 week 2

This week we have been learning about the sun.  We have learned some amazing facts.  Did you know that the sun has special gravity that pulls the other planets towards it? We also found out that the sun is one million three hundred thousand times bigger than the Earth! In art we painted pictures of the sun using red and yellow paint and we mixed them to make orange.

Term 1 week 3

Our reception children have started doing full days and they have had their first PE  and music lessons with us.  In Science we have been looking at our shadows.  We drew around each other's shadows on the playground with chalk.  When ever we were back in the playground we looked to see if our shadow would be in the same place.  We noticed that our shadows moved because the sun was shining from a different direction.  Sometimes we couldn't see our shadows because the sun was covered by clouds.  Our new school councillors met for the first time this week and they discussed our school rules.  On Friday they are going to get their school council badges!

Term 1 week 4

This week we had visitor who came to teach us how to stay safe on the internet.  We learned that we need to make sure we know who we are playing with online.  In Science we made rain some guages to see how much rain we will have in one week.  We have had quite a lot of rain already! The whole school also did a gym run this week and we did five different exercises to measure how fit we are.  At the end of the year we will do it again to see if we have got fitter.

Term 1 week 5

We had an exciting start to the week when The Explorer Dome came to visit!  Josh, Alex and Alex were the teachers. First we took our shoes off then we crawled through the dark tunnel with the beautiful lights. After Alex showed us some wonderful pictures of space.  Next they told us some cool stories about the stars.  Our favourite story was about Orion and his dog Sirius.

Term 1 week 6

After our visit from The Explorer Dome we have been inspired to retell the story of Orion and Sirius.  We have practised telling the story and we have added some actions.  Next we are going to write the story.  This week we also had an outdoor learning session with Mrs Walden.  We looked for stones and we put them in water to see if they changed and we also tried to draw with them.  When they were wet we couldn't draw with them but when they were dry we could.   Later we decorated them if we wanted to with permanent pens and eye stickers! We made them special to us and then we could keep them. We also played some games.

Term 2 week 1

We are all back after a lovely half term holiday! In our Maths lessons we have been learning about odd and even numbers.  We know that even numbers are made of pairs.  Year 1's have been learning about ordinal numbers.  Ordinal numbers tell us the position of something.  In English we have been learning how to write questions.  We have thought  of some questions about space such as, what do astronauts wear?

Do you know what a question is?

Term 2 week 2

We are very excited because in Design Technology we are going to be making moon buggies.  We have looked at some pictures of the real moon buggies that astronauts used on the moon to give us some ideas.  This week some children went to the Tops Activity Festival and had a great time doing different sports.  On Thursday 11th November at 11 O'clock we will have a minutes silence to remember all the soldiers who fought in the war.  Some of us will be wearing a poppy.

Term 2 week 3

This week we had a special visitor. Mrs Beck came to teach us how to cross the road safely.  We went to the hall and practised using a pretend road, a puffin crossing and traffic lights.  In Design and Technology we made the base of our moon buggies. We sawed four pieces of wood and stuck them together with cardboard triangles.  After the glue has dried we will add more things to them.

Term 2 week 4

In English we have been researching our favourite planets by reading information books. Afterwards we wrote our facts in our English books.  Next we are going to create a fact sheet about our planets.  Would you like to come and read them? What is your favourite planet?  Yesterday in Music, we started learning some Christmas songs! We hope that we will be able to perform them to our parents.

Term 2 week 5

Our class teddy Travelling Ted surprised us this week by telling us he wants to travel into space! So we designed a space suit for him.  We had to think about the different materials that would be suitable.  We thought plastic would be good for his helmet, fabric or thin plastic for his space suit and gloves and plastic for his boots.

In History we have been looking at a time line of space travel. We found out that the first living things in space were fruit flies! We were very good at putting the different events in order on a time line.

Term two week 6

Class 1 watched a Christmas show called 'The Night Before Christmas'.  It was very funny when Santa was dancing in his sunglasses and Dasher did some hilarious actions!  We finished our moon buggies this week.  We used our designs to help us decide which equipment to put on to the platform.  We used lots of different materials such as plastic tubs, cardboard boxes, shiny paper and tin foil pots.  They look really good!

Term 2 week 7

On Monday we did Forest School at the park and we made shelters for Father Christmas just in case he needed some where for a little nap on Christmas Eve! On Friday we saw Santa and he gave us a Christmas present! In Class 1 we finished our space mission so we got a class treat. We chose to have extra play, watch a film and do activity wall.  Today we are going to the pub to have our Christmas dinner. Merry Christmas everyone and happy new year!

Term 3 week 2

Happy new year! This term we are learning about The Victorians. They were called 'The Victorians' because their queen was called Victoria. We have been thinking of questions of things we would like to find out for example, 'What were the buildings like?'  In art we are learning how to do portraits.  A portrait is a picture of one person or a small group of people.  We drew portraits of the person who sits opposite us.  There are lots of portraits of Queen Victoria!

Term 3 week 3

This week in history we have been learning about Victorian schools.  Did you know that there were no schools at the start of the Victorian times? Children had to go to work to earn some money for their families. They worked in coal mines, cloth factories, on the streets selling things and up chimneys! In 1872 Queen Victoria decided that all children should go to school.  Next week we are going to dress up as Victorian children and have a Victorian school day.

Term 3 week 4

On Tuesday 25th January we dressed up as Victorian children and had a Victorian day at school!  First Miss Newman rang the bell and told us to line up into a girl's line and a boy's line.  Next we went into the classroom and sat in rows. Then we did the register and we said "present Miss".  After we learned our numbers and wrote them on slates with chalk.  Miss Newman was very strict and we felt a bit scared! Next we read a poem called 'The Owl and the Pussycat' by Edward Lear which was written in 1871. Did you know that our school was built in the Victorian times in 1874? After lunch we had a new teacher called Miss Hill.  The whole of Class 1 went outside to play some Victorian games.  We played skittles, hopscotch and quoits.  When we had finished our games we found something from nature and took it into our class.  Then we drew how it looked on a slate with a slate pencil.  Next we played some indoor games.  We had a go at knuckle stones, pick up sticks, three in a row and shut the door.  Finally Miss Hill read us a story while Miss Newman helped us to write with an ink pen.  It was a weird and exciting day!

Term 3 week 5

Last Friday we were very excited because Conrad's Mummy who is an artist came into our class to teach us how to draw a portrait.  She showed us how to draw a face using a smelly egg!  The egg showed us how to draw an oval shape for the face.  Next Conrad's Mummy drew some lines on the egg to show us where to put the eyes, mouth, nose and ears.  Then we drew a portrait by ourselves and it was of Queen Victoria.  Do you want to come and see our portraits of Queen Victoria which are on display in our class room?

Term 3 week 6

It was very exciting this week because everyone got five Victorian points so we got to reveal a mystery object on our Reward Board.  We had lots of ideas of what it might be such as a rain collector, something that you eat or drink from, something to heat water in, something to cook food in and a lid but it was actually a candle holder which the Victorians used to light their way up the stairs! Last Friday we started sewing a bookmark. It was fun but some people found it tricky and some people found it easy!

Term 4 week 1

This week it is World Book Day but we are having World Book Week! On Monday Class 1 bought in a book to share with their Class 2 buddy.  On Tuesday Class 2 bought a book in to read to Class 1.  On Wednesday we had a story with a different teacher.  On Thursday it was World Book Day and we swapped books with our friends. On Friday we had a World Book Day breakfast and some of our parents came in to read us stories.  We had toast with jam, honey and chocolate spread and hot chocolate to drink. We also bought in an object from our favourite  book and we needed to guess which book it was from. World Book was very enjoyable!

Term 4 week 2

On Thursday we went on a school trip to Bristol to see the SS Great Britain! After we put our bags away Brian took us on a tour and showed us around the boat. We saw some pretend people, horses and animals on the deck of the ship.  We looked in the cabins and we saw some bunk beds and surprisingly two guns! Next we had lunch. Then we went under the pretend water to the bottom of the boat and we saw a big propeller and rudder.   Soon we went to a special classroom and we learned that a journey on the boat took 65 days.  We did different activities that Victorian children did when they were on the boat.  Finally we went back to school on the coach.

On Friday an author and an illustrator called Hannah Shaw came in to talk about her books and the main character was called Unipiggle.  She taught us how to draw Unipiggle.  Then we created our own story worlds.  Next she read us a book she illustrated called 'The Disgusting Sandwich'.  It was funny and disgusting!

Term 4 week 3

Today it is Red Nose Day. The School Council decided that we should wear brightly coloured clothes.  We had to pay £2 to help children all over the world. We could also enter a competition to design a red nose.  We wonder who will win the prize?

Term 4 week 4

On Tuesday we had two special activities.  First we had odd socks day and we had to wear odd socks or snazzy socks because we wanted to celebrate  people with Downs Syndrome.  We learned that we are all unique just like our socks and we should include everyone in all things!  After lunch Jimmy's Dad came in to talk about his job. He is an author and a journalist and he told us that words are important.  He asked us to create a name for a chocolate bar! We thought of 'Mighty Mint', 'Caramello'. 'Gold Bar', 'Powerful Mint' and 'Orangino'!

Term 4 week 5

On Tuesday Dougie's Mum came in to teach us about her job. Can you guess what her job is?  Her job is to clean the dirty and dusty artefacts in the Bristol museum!  She cleans Doris the plesiosaur with a paint brush, a sponge and a back pack hoover!  On Thursday a brass band came in to play music for Class 1 in the hall.  They brought a tuba, a trumpet, a French horn and a trombone.  Some people got to play a French horn that was made from a hosepipe! You had to keep your lips together and blow a raspberry into the mouth piece to make a sound!  One of the musicians played some music with a watering can!  They played the music from Wallace and Grommet and Peppa Pig.

Term 5 week 1

On Monday we met the Bath Rugby coaches and we played some rugby games with them.  Everybody enjoyed the game called 'Sumo Tag'!  We had to stick two tags on our waist and our partner had to try and get them off.  There was also a game called 'Island Tag' where we had to be monkeys and run to an island without getting tagged by a crocodile!  On Thursday we went on a bus to a swimming pool in Malmesbury for swimming lessons.  We had fun and we are looking forward to going again next week.

Term 5 weeks 2 and 3

This term we are learning about the rainforest. The biggest rainforest in the world is the Amazon rainforest!  it is in South America.  The Amazon rainforest is the habitat for lots of different animals such as snakes, tigers, jaguars, monkeys, gorillas, red-eyed frogs, scorpions, chameleons, sloths, orangutans, river dolphins and crocodiles. Do you know any other rainforest animals?  We have now turned our role play into a rainforest.

Term 5 week 4

This week we have chosen an animal from the rainforest and we have researched facts about them.  Did you know that scorpions can have up to 100 babies? In art we looked at some paintings by Henri Rousseau and we made printing blocks of different kinds of leaves.  We have printed them to make a rainforest background.

The Year 2's have been doing their SATs and they thought they were great fun!

Term 6 week 1

On Monday we learned about nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs.  Next we read The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry and we looked for nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs.  Today we are having an open day to show people how perfect our school is!  After school we are having ice cream Friday when we can buy ice creams!

Term 6 week 3

This week we have been doing a five day challenge where we have been trying to walk, cycle, scoot or park and stride to school.  We have been doing this to save the planet because there will be less pollution. There will also be less traffic so we will be safer. It also helps us to be healthy! On Friday  it is sports day and we will be doing lots of races.

Term 6 week 5

On Tuesday an author called Alex Evelyn came to talk about her book. She loves plants and she wrote about some peculiar plants in her book.  We learned about some of them which were Elephant cactus, Titan Arum, The Giant Lily Pad and a Pitcher Plant! On Thursday the new Reception children came for a visit whilst the Year 2's visited Class 2.
