Sports Day 2024

On Friday 28th June we held our annual sports day.  The children competed in a variety of events while being cheered on by their families and friends. The races included sprint, ball and spoon, skipping, bean bag on the head, obstacle and relay alongside jumping and throwing events.  Great fun was had by all and green team were the winning team this year.

Athletics Festival

On Wednesday 26th June we took our Year 6's to an athletics festival at Malmesbury Secondary School.  This gave them the chance to try out some new skills such as hurdles, shot putt, javelin as well as running in some races and competing in a relay.  They were also able to meet up with other year 6 pupils who they may be starting secondary school with in September. Everyone enjoyed the different events on a very hot and humid afternoon.

Cricket Festival

We took at team of Year 4 and 5 children to a cricket festival at Malmesbury Cricket Club.  We played four matches and learned a great deal about batting, bowling and fielding and our skills improved in each match.  Our pupils worked well together as a team however the cows were a bit of a distraction!

Circus Skills Workshops

We ended this term with Circus Skills Workshops to show us that exercise can be lots of fun! Steve from 'Shooting Stars' came and taught us how to balance feathers on different parts of our bodies, how to juggle with scarves, balls and sticks, how to spin plates, walk on stilts and use a diabolo.  We learned lots of new skills!

Skipping sessions

Luckington pupils enjoyed an afternoon of skipping in the sunshine this week. Jack from 'Dan The Skipping Man' delivered workshops to both classes starting with how to skip with a single bounce, a double bounce, a running step.  He then taught the pupils some tricks such as skipping on one foot, 'The Crossover',  'The Rodeo' and 'The Pretzel'!

Our older Playground Council leaders then took part in a workshop to learn skipping games to lead with the other children at playtimes.

The afternoon finished with an assembly showcasing our fantastic new skills.

Easter Egg Hunt

On the last day of term 4 we combined our outdoor learning session with an Easter Egg hunt.  We started by playing some games on the field and then got into groups.  Each group had an wooden egg with a pattern on it.  We went over to the park and hunted for five more wooden eggs with the same pattern on them.  Once we had found them we worked together to make a nest to put them in.  When we got back to school we were able to exchange our wooden eggs for a chocolate one!

Year 3 and 4 Football Festival

On Wednesday 20th March we took a team of year 3 and 4 pupils to a football tournament in Malmesbury. We played eight games losing three, drawing one and winning four.  We came fifth out of nine teams overall. All players played in different positions and we saw some great defending, goal scoring and goal keeping.

World Book Day

World Book Day started with a breakfast of pain au chocolats and hot chocolate in the hall while parents and volunteers read us stories.  We also enjoyed stories with different members of staff during the morning and in the afternoon we shared our favourite books with our reading buddies. At the end of the day we took home a World Book day book to share with our families.

Whole School Trip to Ufton Park

On Wednesday 28th February we took the whole school to Ufton Court Education Centre to learn more about the Ancient Egyptians.  During the day we acted out the embalming, mummification, and death ceremony of a Pharaoh.  We looked at artefacts tat would have been used for these ceremonies and learned about the beliefs of the ancient Egyptians.  The children particularly enjoyed the gory bits such as removing the brain using a hook up the nose!  After lunch and a playtime in the lovely grounds we played games from the Egyptian Book of the Dead.  One favourite was leading our blindfolded partner through an arena filled with (pretend) pooh! Our last activity was to act out a scene in an Egyptian court and finding out which punishments people may have had.

Netball Festival

On Wednesday 7th February we took a team to our cluster netball festival at Malmesbury Secondary School. Everyone played well, gaining in confidence with every game.  It was great to see all the shooting, defending and intercepting skills that they had practised at netball club in action.  We came 9th overall.

Gymnastics Festival

On Wednesday 24th January eight children competed in a Gymnastics Festival at The Activity Zone in Malmesbury.  They had to learn and perform a floor routine and a vault.  Everyone performed well and we achieved a first, second and two third places in the floor routines! The children also got the opportunity to try out the gymnastic equipment in Malmesbury Secondary School's sports hall which was great fun.

Swimming Gala

On Wednesday 6th December we took a group of children to a swimming gala at The Activity Zone in Malmesbury.  Each child competed in an individual race, a medley relay and a front crawl relay race.  All children swam really well and demonstrated a range of different strokes.  Overall, out of seven schools our Year 5 girls came first, our Year 5 boys came second and our Year 6 boys came second.  What a fantastic achievement!

Chocolate Making Workshop

To enhance our topic on 'Chocolate' we had a visitor from Victoria who showed us how to temper chocolate and set them in moulds to make individual chocolates.  This has given us the skills to go on to design and make chocolate bars in our Design Technology lessons.

Tops Activity Festival

On Thursday 9th November we took a group of children to the Tops Activity Festival.

The children enjoyed practising sports skills and participating in a variety of sports including basketball, football, cricket and curling.

School trip to Cadbury World

On Wednesday 8th November the whole school went on a trip to Cadbury World in Birmingham.  We started by walking through the jungle to find out about the Mayan people who first discovered cocoa beans and used them to trade with and make a delicious hot chocolate drink.  We then learned about cocoa beans being transported to Europe and how 'Chocolate Houses' became fashionable places to drink hot chocolate in London.  After that we watched a presentation about George Cadbury and his sons who opened a chocolate factory in Birmingham and was one of the first people to invent a chocolate bar.  Then we looked at a timeline of the different products invented by Cadburys and how they advertised them.  After an interesting car ride, we finally got to taste some chocolate and have a go at writing with chocolate and  tempering it.  We also had a talk about how chocolate is produced from 'bean to bar'.

Tag Rugby Festivals

After having coaching sessions from Bath Rugby in our PE lessons this term we took a team of Year 3/4 pupils and a team of Year 5/6 pupils to a Tag Rugby Festival at Minety Rugby Club.  Both teams performed extremely well demonstrating their skills of tagging, passing and scoring tries.
